Thanksgiving in America, originally intended as a day of gratitude to God, has transformed into a prelude to the commercial frenzy of Christmas sales. The rush for discounts of up to 70 percent overshadows the true spirit of giving thanks. Many have observed a shift in attitudes from childhood memories to the chaos of today’s fast-paced and morally challenged society – expressions of gratitude have become rare.

With relentless pursuits of discounted goods that reveal a materialistic focus devoid of thankfulness, despite the abundance of benefits from God, many prioritize acquiring coveted items over expressing gratitude. The Bible, on the other hand, highlights the importance of gratitude in response to God’s blessings. It emphasizes the need to thank Him for His goodness, mercy, and training. There are many biblical historical examples, such as Israel’s initial praise after the Red Sea.

We should be wary of the prevailing mindset of self-centeredness, materialism, and ingratitude. This all plays out societally as we see issues like violence and leadership failures. The nation is on a downward trajectory. David’s example underscores the importance of a humble and thankful attitude, even in troubled times.

Ultimately, we need to return to gratitude, using biblical wisdom as a guide. This should include a thankful approach to relationships, emphasizing the role of gratitude in building bonds of friendship. As the world faces moral decline, we need to maintain a spirit of thanksgiving, acknowledging the myriad benefits bestowed by God.
